Application
Measuring the value of electrical impedance of the vagina is a precise method for detecting the optimum day for mating during the 4-day estrous cycle in the rat.
There is a relationship between the electrical impedance of the vaginal mucous membrane and mucus and the various phases of the oestral cycle in animals. Daily measurement of the impedance in rats is an easy and rapid method for monitoring oestrus. Being less traumatic than the classical and time-consuming method of vaginal smears, it rarely disturbs the continuity of normal cycles.
Cyclic changes of electrical impedance of vagina (EIV) were studied in the rats. EIV indicated high value (over 3,000 omega) only at proestrus, and it was lower (under 3,000 omega) at other stage of estrous cycle. These results indicates that measuring the EIV made to distinguish proestrus from other phases of estrous cycle. The female caged with male showed high copulation rate when her EIV had been over 3,000 omega.
