5R Workshop - New approaches to animal anesthesia and non-invasive blood pressure measurements

Kent Scientific and Animalab invite you to participate in a product presentation tour with a 5R workshop focusing on anesthesia and non-invasive blood pressure measurement in laboratory mice and rats:

5R Workshop - New approaches to animal anesthesia and non-invasive blood pressure measurements

How to improve animal welfare during long-term surgery on mice and rats and follow the 5R guidelines: Replacement, Reduction, Refinement, Reuse, and Responsibility?

The workshops will take place in four cities: Munich, Frankfurt am Main, Bonn, and Cologne. Choose one and register to reserve your spot and materials by November 30, 2025. Each participant will receive a training certificate.

Program

9:30 - Registration

10:00 - Workshop with lectures & hands on sessions - anesthesia

  • Why gas anesthesia is better than injection?
  • Major differences between low-flow and high-flow anesthesia systems: SomnoFlo® or SomnoSuite®

12:00 – 12:15 Lunch brake

12:15 – 13:45 Workshop with lectures & hands on session - blood pressure measurement

  • Why is CODA® the gold standard for non-invasive blood pressure measurement?
  • CODA® hands on session

14:00 End of the workshop

The workshop will be provided by Irina Toore, Scientific Developer at Kent Scientific.

The workshops will be held in English.

About Kent Scientific

Kent Scientific Corporation, with over 30 years of experience, delivers innovative, integrated solutions for pre-clinical research and drug discovery worldwide. The company is a recognized leader in advanced non-invasive equipment for laboratory animal research and actively promotes ethical standards by supporting the North American 3Rs Collaborative and incorporating the 5Rs (Replacement, Reduction, Refinement, Reuse, Responsibility) into its product development and business practices.

How Kent Scientific equipment supports the 5R Principles?

1. Replacement

Kent Scientific provides accurate, high-quality data that can feed computational models and simulations in life science and preclinical areas. The equipment provided by Kent Scientific reduces usage of invasive methods, which promote alternatives.

2. Reduction

Kent's equipment—such as CODA® tail-cuff blood pressure system and non-invasive pulse oximeters ensure accurate, repeatable measurements that enhance data accuracy and consistency, reducing variability and the number of animals required to achieve statistically valid results.

For instance, SomnoFlo® low-flow anesthesia system allows for precise anesthetic delivery tailored to the animal’s weight, significantly reducing the amount of anesthetic used. This results in more efficient and ethical experiments, potentially lowering the number of animals needed.

3. Refinement

The company's non-invasive and minimally invasive tools reduce pain and stress of animals during procedures. For instance, SomnoSuite® anesthesia system reduces animal suffering and recovery time after surgery, what improves animal welfare. SomnoSuite® is designed to protect lab staff from anesthetic gas exposure, aligning with broader reforms in lab safety and animal care standards.

Advanced physiological monitoring tools like PhysioSuite®, CapnoScan®, and MouseSTAT®, together with integrated heating systems and surgical platforms, help maintain homeostasis during procedures, reducing animal stress and improving post-surgical recovery. This results in more humane treatment and superior data quality.

4. Reusage

Kent’s surgical components are made from durable materials (e.g., stainless steel, titanium), allowing for repeated sterilization and use. Modules can be upgraded over time, which fosters sustainable, long-term equipment utilization.

5. Responsibility

Kent Scientific promotes ethical research practices by designing equipment in line with global standards for humane animal treatment. The company supports educational initiatives and training through partnerships (e.g., Rene Remie Surgical Skills Centre) and encourages a culture of ethical research with its KentGivesBack program, ensuring responsible use of their devices in accordance with the 5R principles. Kent Scientific products are designed to meet or exceed international animal welfare standards (e.g., AAALAC, EU Directive 2010/63/EU).
