Iconeus One – The Only Functional Ultrasound System Designed for Neuroscientists

Since its launch in 2019, Iconeus One has set the benchmark for preclinical functional ultrasound (fUS) imaging. Dozens of research groups worldwide rely on it for real-time imaging of cerebral blood flow and microvasculature in awake or anesthetized animals – delivering the sensitivity and spatial resolution needed to see what is happening in the brain at the finest scales.

Not only does it work on awake or freely moving animals, but it can image the brain in real-time – a capability that fMRI simply cannot match. With special efforts made to keep both the hardware and software intuitive, researchers can start generating insights within days of installation.

Three Models for Every Research Need

Iconeus One is available in three models – Xplore, Xpand, and Xcel – each building on the previous one, with a straightforward upgrade path so your system can grow alongside your research.

Iconeus One Xplore

The entry-level platform providing all the essentials for routine 2D fUS imaging. Features include 128 channels, a standalone linear motor for precise probe positioning, a built-in 2.5 Hz framerate for low-noise images, and the core fUS software bundle. Ideal for anyone taking their first steps with functional ultrasound.

Iconeus One Xpand

Builds on Xplore with a four-axis motorized scanning platform, Ultrasound Localization Microscopy (ULM) capability with resolution down to 10 µm, 3D time-separated multislice imaging, and automatic brain atlas registration via the Allen Mouse Brain Reference Atlas. Framerate options up to 10 Hz available.

Iconeus One Xcel

The top-of-the-range system for researchers pushing the boundaries of fUS. With 256 channels, full volumetric fUS (vfUS®) capability using 4D-capable probes, 3D ULM with 10 µm resolution, framerates up to 100 Hz (10 ms time resolution), expert-level software settings, and access to raw data files.

Key Features

  • Awake imaging: Image freely moving or head-fixed animals – not limited to anesthetized subjects as with fMRI.
  • High sensitivity: Plane-wave ultrasound generates tens of thousands of echoes per second, enabling detection of hemodynamic changes as small as 2% without trial averaging.
  • High spatial resolution: 100 × 100 µm in-plane voxels with the standard 15 MHz probe.
  • Fast acquisition: A complete 2D fUS image in ~400 ms; a full 3D brain scan in as little as 20 seconds.
  • Super-resolution (ULM): Ultrasound Localization Microscopy achieves resolutions as low as 5–10 µm for detailed microvascular mapping.
  • 3D and 4D imaging: Multi-slicing and volumetric acquisition available on Xpand and Xcel models.
  • Plug and play: Ready to use out of the box; integrated Allen Mouse Brain Atlas for instant anatomical reference.
  • Portable: All electronics in a wheeled imaging station that can be moved around the lab.

Software Suite: IcoScan, IcoStudio & IcoLab

All Iconeus One systems ship with a core fUS software bundle comprising three modules:

  • IcoScan – Data acquisition: live Doppler and B-mode viewing, single/multi-plane acquisitions, on-the-fly probe positioning.
  • IcoStudio – Data visualization and analysis: activation maps, CBV quantification, functional connectivity matrices, ULM visualization.
  • IcoLab – Batch processing and reporting: process hundreds of scans at once, standardized neuroimaging pipelines, automated reports.

Compatible Probes

  • IcoPrime – Versatile 15 MHz all-round probe for mice and rats; 100 µm resolution; included standard with all models.
  • IcoPrime-Lite / IcoPrime-Mini – Lightweight variants for mobile awake-animal configurations.
  • IcoPrime-XL – Extended field of view for marmosets.
  • IcoRange / IcoDeep – Deeper scanning for larger animals (primates, pigs).
  • IcoPrime-4D MultiArray – Whole-brain 4D imaging in head-fixed mice (Xcel only).
  • IcoPrime-4D RCA – Volumetric fUS and 3D ULM in non-human primates requiring craniotomy (Xcel only).
