Sutter Instrument

P-2000 Laser-Based Micropipette Puller

Code P-2000
The P-2000 is Sutter Instrument's CO2 laser-based micropipette puller — the only puller capable of working with quartz (fused silica) glass. Available in two configurations (P-2000/G for OD ≥ 0.6 mm; P-2000/F for OD < 0.6 mm), it produces micropipettes, patch pipettes, optic fibers, and electrospray/nanospray tips with unmatched precision.

P-2000 — The Gold Standard for Quartz Glass Micropipette Pulling

The P-2000 Laser-Based Micropipette Puller from Sutter Instrument is the only micropipette puller capable of working with quartz (fused silica) glass — the strongest and most chemically pure glass available for scientific applications. Using a precisely modulated and directed CO2 laser as its heat source, the P-2000 delivers unparalleled control over pipette taper geometry across an exceptional range of glass diameters from 0.125 mm to 1.8 mm (model dependent).

Two Models — One for Every Application

  • P-2000/G — optimized for glass OD ≥ 0.6 mm (up to 1.5 mm quartz / 1.8 mm conventional); ideal for patch pipettes, intracellular electrodes, and microperfusion needles
  • P-2000/F — optimized for glass/fiber OD < 0.6 mm (down to 0.125 mm); designed for optical fiber tapering, nano-electrospray ionization emitters from fused silica capillary tubing, and near-field scanning microscopy probes

Key Features

  • CO2 laser heat source — enables pulling of quartz glass (impossible with filament pullers)
  • Microprocessor-controlled pull cycle with up to 100 stored programs, each with up to 8 command lines
  • 5 independently adjustable parameters per cycle line: HEAT, FILAMENT, VELOCITY, DELAY, PULL — providing exquisite control of taper geometry
  • Produces 2 identical pipettes per pull; tip diameters 0.03–5 µm (glass) or 0.01–5 µm (fiber)
  • Maximum taper length: 1.8 cm; maximum glass OD: 1.65 mm quartz / 1.8 mm borosilicate
  • Write-protection for programs; Ramp Test function to establish optimal heat settings
  • Copy program function for rapid duplication of pulling protocols
  • Class I laser product (safe to operate as shipped; 20W CO2 laser with full safety enclosure and interlocks)
  • Dual voltage/frequency: 100–120 VAC / 200–240 VAC, 50–60 Hz

Applications of P-2000 System

  • Patch clamp pipette fabrication from quartz glass
  • Intracellular recording electrodes
  • Microinjection and microperfusion needles
  • Optical fiber tapering and near-field scanning probe fabrication
  • Electrospray and nanospray ionization emitters (HPLC, mass spectrometry)
