Sutter Instrument

TRIO™-235, 3-axis / 0–90° Diagonal Micromanipulator

Code TRIO-235
The TRIO™-235 from Sutter Instrument is a highly stable 3-axis motorized micromanipulator ideal for in vivo work. It replaces the Z-axis with an adjustable 50 mm diagonal axis (angle set by set screw), paired with 25 mm X and Y axes. Motor powers down during recording, eliminating drift and electrical noise. Compact integrated ROE controller with no rack mounting required.

TRIO™-235 — 3-Axis / 0–90° Diagonal Motorized Micromanipulator (In Vivo)

The TRIO™-235 from Sutter Instrument is purpose-built for in vivo electrophysiology work. It replaces the conventional Z-axis with a mechanically adjustable diagonal axis whose angle is set by a set screw (0–90°). This configuration — pairing a traditional X and Y axis with a true physical diagonal axis — gives 50 mm of travel in the diagonal direction and 25 mm in X and Y. Software creates a synthetic Z-axis by combining the diagonal and X axes in reverse, allowing the familiar 3-axis control paradigm.

Key Features

  • 3 independent axes: 25 mm travel on X and Y; 50 mm travel on adjustable diagonal axis
  • True mechanical diagonal axis: Angle set by set screw (0–90°) — ideal for stereotaxic in vivo approaches
  • Synthetic Z-axis: Software combines diagonal and X axes to present a standard 3-axis interface
  • Lead-screw precision design: Same precision bearing and lead-screw as TRIO-245; compact footprint
  • Motor powers down during recording: Eliminates motor heat and electrical noise — the quietest manipulators in the industry
  • Zero drift: Ensures experimental stability throughout long recording sessions
  • Integrated ROE controller: No rack-mounted controller required; minimal bench footprint
  • Logarithmic acceleration: Smooth, proportional speed control from the ROE knobs
  • WORK and HOME memory positions: Rapid, reproducible pipette repositioning
  • Universal mounting: Compatible with the most popular headstages and pipette holders
  • DIP switch directionality: Easily adapt ROE knob direction to user preference
  • Dual voltage: 115/230 V, 50/60 Hz; CE certified

Applications

  • In vivo extracellular and intracellular recording
  • Stereotaxic brain probe insertion
  • In vivo patch clamp
  • Any application where a diagonal approach angle is defined by anatomy
